Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of fall prevention interventions in elderly participants aged 60 or older were eligible for inclusion. Trials were required to report quality of life (QoL) or Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL).
Most interventions included in the review were exercise-oriented; other trials included information-oriented or comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) oriented trials. Most trials used single interventions and others used multiple interventions (further details reported in the text). Controls included standard care, routine daily activities, single-session counselling and guidance about falling, physical and conventional therapy, routine hospital discharge planning, written information, social seminars, telephone calls, interviews and/or home visits. Intervention duration ranged from 0.5 to 12 months. The average age of participants ranged from 69 to 82 years with an average of 76% women. Over half the trials were conducted among community dwellers; others were conducted in institutions.
Three reviewers selected studies for inclusion.
