111 (61%) of the patients had no symptoms of DVT prior to scanning. Of the 261 scans performed, 239 (92%) were normal, 16 (6%) were positive for proximal lower extremity DVT, and 6 (2%) showed thrombus limited to the calf veins. The 72 patients with symptoms of DVT prior to scanning were significantly more likely to have proximal DVT than those without symptoms (15% vs 5%, p<0.05), however half of the patients with DVT showed no evidence of DVT prior to the scan. Patients with spinal injuries (n=38, 21%) had a higher incidence of proximal DVT (18% vs 6%, p<0.05).
