Costs associated with the use of multi day infusion pumps at home and in hospital, and the costs associated with intermittent injections in hospital, were estimated. The costs associated with the use of morphine were excluded as these were deemed to be the same for all treatment options. Specifically, daily costs were estimated for hospital care, nursing home care and outpatient care. Data were derived from the local county council economic department. Average costs for the use of a hospital room, bed, supplies, laboratory test, transport of supplies and drugs and time spent by physicians and nurses in standard patient care were estimated. The additional material and nursing costs of 6 intermittent injections per day were also estimated. The pharmacy costs of the pumps and drug compounding and the costs of transporting pumps were also estimated. The cost data were estimated in 1992, but 1995 prices were used.
