Intensive guideline-based education and supervision in the treatment of hypertension consisting of:
(1) identification of a clinical champion responsible for the project;
(2) Faculty education and development (meetings with the attending faculty at the beginning of the intervention period to review literature-based evidence for the guidelines and addressing concerns by house-staff and nurse practitioners about usage of guideline medications);
(3)Assignment of a PharmD to provide intervention clinic expertise in the pharmacotherapy of hypertension and cardiovascular disorders;
(4) Clinic-based education and precepting of clinicians;and
(5) Feedback from the firm (ambulatory clinic) practice during monthly firm meetings (intervention) versus an individualised approach utilising a broad range of anti-hypertensive medications in initial and subsequent therapy (comparator).
