The GPGB test was as effective as the culture test, but more expensive. This cost was dependent on factors such as the number of specimens per test run, the cost of the reagent and the price of labour. Since the probe method was less labour intensive than the culture method, the authors argued that higher test volumes could make the probe cost-saving compared with the culture method and that the probe could be better suited to interfacing with laboratory systems.
