The annual incidence of SBP with and without antibiotics were estimated to be:
clients with a previous history of SBP, 28% and 12%;
clients with no previous history of SBP but with an ascitic fluid total protein concentration of < 1g/dL, 41% and 16%;
clients with previous episodes of SBP, 69% and 20%.
These results embody the assumption that the two antibiotic regimens are of equal efficacy within the same patient population, given the lack of data for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prophylaxis.
