Costs and benefits for vaccination without and with serotesting were combined as follows:
cost per case prevented, $22,000 and $34,000;
cost per life saved, $1,400,000 and $2,200,000;
cost per life-year saved, $58,000 and $92,000;
cost per QALY saved relative to the no vaccination option $47,000 and $75,000.
The sensitivity analysis established that the incidence of nosocomial hepatitis A was the key parameter of the model, which, when 10 times above the presumed rate, resulted in net cost savings for the vaccination option.
