The incremental cost per year of life saved was calculated as the measure of cost-effectiveness, giving the following values compared to the no screening strategy:
$18,800 for annual mammography from ages 40-79 years;
$18,200 for annual screening from ages 40-49 years for high risk patients (10% of total) plus biennial screening from ages 40-49 years in combination with annual screening from ages 50-79 years for normal risk patients (90% of total),
$17,700 for annual screening from ages 40-64 years and biennial screening from ages 65-79 years; and
$16,100 for annual screening from ages 40-49 years and biennial screening from ages 50-79 years.
The sensitivity analyses established the general robustness of the results to alterations in parameters considered, with identification of the discount rate as the most sensitive factor of the model.
