The results were presented as median values.
The time taken to reach the target range was 2 hours in both the midazolam group (range: 0 - 39) and the diazepam group (range: 0 - 22).
The proportion of time within the target range was 85% (range: 0 - 100) in the midazolam group and 59.2% (range: 0 - 100) in the diazepam group.
The proportion of time under-sedated was 0% (range: 0 - 21) in the midazolam group and 21.1% (range: 0 - 43) in the diazepam group (p=0.01).
The proportion of time over-sedated was 14.8% (range: 0 - 100) in the midazolam group and 2.8% (range: 0 - 97) in the diazepam group.
The proportion of patients adequately sedated was 64.7% in the midazolam group and 35.7% in the diazepam group (p=0.21).
No patient in either group exhibited inappropriately prolonged sedation that could be attributed to benzodiazepine.
