The analysis was conducted on an intention to treat basis. The primary health outcomes were:
the MMSE,
the Activities of Daily Living scale,
the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale,
the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory,
the Initiation/Perseveration subscale of the Dementia Rating Scale,
the Rating Scale for Side-Effects,
the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS),
the Extrapyramidal Side-Effects Rating Scale,
the Global Assessment of Functioning, and
the Axis I psychiatric diagnosis established by DSM-IV criteria.
The patients in the two groups were matched according to their DSM-IV diagnoses, age, and MMSE score on admission. No significant differences were found between the groups across the diagnostic or medication categories.
