Compared with standard care provided in an inpatient setting, visits to a specialist outpatient clinic resulted in:
improved FEV1, 60.1% (+/- 21%) versus 55.1% (+/- 21.6%), (p=0.02);
a reduction in corticosteroid use, 12.8 (+/- 6.0) mg versus 22.1 (+/- 11.2) mg, (p<0.0001);
an increase in the number of outpatient visits, 6.24 (+/- 2.5) versus (3.67 +/-3.4), (p<0.05);
an increase in the number of spirometry tests, 4.67 (+/- 1.53) versus (1.43 +/-1.29), (p<0.05);
a decrease in the number of emergency room visits, 0.24 (+/- 0.44) versus 1.19 (+/- 0.47), (p<0.05); and
a decrease in the number of hospitalisations, 0.1 (+/- 0.3) versus 0.9 (+/- 1), (p<0.05).
