Citation Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research. Brachytherapy for treatment of prostate cancer. Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR) 1997: 19 Authors' objectives This report has been prepared in response to a request for information on the status of brachytherapy as a treatment for prostate cancer. Currently in Alberta, external beam irradiation is used for patients with prostate cancer who require radiation treatment. There have been a number of recent requests for out-of-province referral of patients for brachytherapy treatment.
Authors' conclusions The quality of evidence on effectiveness of brachytherapy as a treatment for prostate cancer is still comparatively limited, particularly for longer-term outcomes. There is a continuing need for good quality controlled trials. However, brachytherapy is increasingly regarded as a useful option for appropriately selected patients, both as monotherapy and in combination with EBRT. Techniques are still evolving and levels of skill will vary between centres.
