Technote TN 14. 1998 Authors' objectives This report has been produced in response to a request for an evaluation of the literature regarding a proposed telephone nurse triage service. This service would be run with qualified personnel who could answer and direct callers' queries about acute care, symptom management, referrals, health information and education, and post-acute follow-up.
Authors' conclusions There are several telephone nurse triage services in the U. S., one in Canada.
There is evidence that they are useful, but data are based on poor quality studies.
There is a lack of data on outcomes in terms of use of services and health status of callers.
Legal, organisational and economic matters need to be resolved.
