Citation Homik J, Hailey D. Quantitative ultrasound for bone density measurement. Edmonton: Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR). AHFMR Report - HTA 11. 1998 Authors' objectives To provide an appraisal of the status of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) for bone density measurement, considering its performance and predictive value compared to x-ray based technology (DXA) and issues related to its use in Canada.
Authors' conclusions Quantitative calcaneal ultrasound appears to be a promising diagnostic technology but its role in diagnosis of osteoporosis remains unclear. Further evidence regarding its long-term precision, predictive ability and potential cost-effectiveness is required before its place in routine health care services can be established.
