Islet cell transplantation is performed in patients with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus, with the goals of eliminating the need for exogenous insulin and improving glucose control, thereby preventing or reversing secondary diabetic complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, and vasculopathy.
