Functional electrical stimulation (FES) uses the application of short-duration electrical impulses to stimulate the peripheral nerves that control the paretic muscles in order to cause muscle contractions that are of sufficient strength and coordination to provide function or accomplish functional tasks. While FES devices may be used during the performance of functional tasks or activities of daily living (ADL), the ultimate goal of FES is to promote the recovery of stroke-induced motor dysfunction, thereby increasing independence and improving quality of life.
