Administration of exogenous testosterone has been investigated as a treatment for low sexual desire in women. Endogenous androgens, produced in women by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and peripheral tissue, are thought to play a role in the regulation of sexual desire. In women in whom both ovaries are removed (bilateral oophorectomy), testosterone levels drop substantially and sexual desire may be reduced. Although the precise relationship between testosterone levels and sexual desire in women is not clear, the goal of testosterone therapy is to increase sexual desire.
