Revision sistematica sobre su eficacia y seguridad. [Cost-effectiveness analysis of population screening tests for colorectal cancer: systematic review of the efficacy and safety] Madrid: Unidad de Evaluacion de Tecnologias Sanitarias (UETS). UETS No 2006/06. 2008 Authors' objectives
To assess the efficacy/effectiveness/safety of different screening colorectal cancer tests in average risk people. Comparative evaluation of screening tests: fecal occult blood test (FBOT), flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. To analyse emergent technologies such as computed tomographic colonography (CTC).
Authors' conclusions High-quality evidence was found that screening with the guaiac FOBT, haemoccult, reduce mortality in CRC. The available data are not enough to determine which FOBT (guaiac-based tests or immunochemical) has the highest sensitivity and specificity at this time.No RCT has been completed providing mortality data relating to flexible sigmoidoscopy screening. The colonoscopy has been used principally as secondary screening tool. There is not enough evidence demostrating that combined FOBT and flexible sigmoidoscopy obtain a greater reduction in CRC mortality compared to either modality alone.Based on the current evidence, CTC cannot be proposed for colorectal cancer screening in average risk population.
