Corneal endothelial keratoplasty for the treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunction. Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rapida No 442. 2015 Authors' conclusions Evidence of moderate quality assessing the efficacy of endothelial keratoplasty for the treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunction was identified.
Endothelial keratoplasty compared with penetrating keratoplasty achieves a significantly better corrected visual acuity, but it is accompanied by a significantly shorter transplant survival, specially at less experienced centers, when the number of endothelial cells from the donor's tissue is low or there are concomitant infectious processes or glaucoma.
The clinical practice guidelines identified consider endothelial keratoplasty only in the presence of pure corneal endothelial dysfunction, and at centers with adequate technological training.
The coverage policies found consider endothelial keratoplasty for the treatment of endothelial dysfunction when there is no other condition at corneal level.
