Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rápida N° 458. 2016 Authors' conclusions No high-quality studies assessing ultrasound versus nuclear magnetic resonance in peripheral nerve assessment have been found. There is more evidence on the use of ultrasound in carpal tunnel syndrome and it suggests that it would not be an adequate diagnostic alternative when compared with electromyography.
Some clinical practice guidelines consider ultrasound is a second-line diagnostic procedure after electromyography and conduction tests when assessing peripheral never pathologies such as the carpal tunnel syndrome. The coverage policies do not consider it for coverage.
