Citation Mengarelli C, García Martí S, Pichon-Riviere A, Augustovski F, Alcaraz A, Bardach A, Ciapponi A, López A, Rey-Ares L. Biomedical treatment for autism spectrum disorders. Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Informe de Respuesta Rapida No. 504. 2016 Authors' conclusions No randomized clinical trials having assessed the use of biomedical treatment (defined as a heterogeneous subgroup of alternative therapies such as vitamin supplements, special diets, digestive enzymes, etc.) in patients with autism spectrum disorders have been found.
Very low-quality evidence does not show that biomedical treatment with gluten free and/or casein free diets or diets containing omega fatty acids or vitamin B 6 with magnesium or multivitamin and mineral supplements is clinically beneficial for this group of patients.
Neither the clinical practice guidelines nor health coverage policies consulted endorse its use because they consider it experimental.
