[Bariatric surgery as treatment for obesity in subjects over 65 years old] Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rapida No 508. 2017 Authors' conclusions Low-quality evidence shows that bariatric surgery might be considered as an effective alternative in terms of weight loss in adults over 65 years, however, there may be a higher risk of short-term complications. Despite scarce and low-quality evidence, most clinical practice guidelines consulted do not mention age as a screening criterion in adults; however, they do mention that surgical and anesthetic risks along with the presence of comorbidities in adults over 65 with a body mass index of more than 40 kg/m2 should be considered. Most health sponsors do not mention age as a restriction when screening patients for coverage either.
