[Cryoablation for the treatment of persistent or symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation] Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rapida No 517. 2017 Authors' conclusions No evidence was found on cryoablation-related mortality. Moderate quality evidence showed that cryoablation procedures have a lower rate of short-term and mid-term recurrence than radiofrequency ablation in patients with persistent paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, although they have a higher rate of complications including cerebrovascular disease, cardiac tamponade, bleeding, and phrenic nerve lesions.
Moderate quality evidence suggests that cryoablation procedures would be shorter than radiofrequency procedures.
The main clinical practice guidelines and coverage policies assessed, consider cryoablation as another treatment alternative, although radiofrequency ablation continues being the standard of care for patients with persistent or symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
