[Fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurement in patients with asthma and chronic cough] Buenos Aires: Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS). Documentos de Evaluación de Tecnologías Sanitarias, Informe de Respuesta Rapida No 536. 2017 Authors' conclusions Moderate quality evidence suggests that fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement in asthma treatment monitoring both in children and adults could decrease the number and frequency of exacerbations, with no impact on clinical symptoms. In a subgroup of children with severe asthma, low quality evidence suggests that FeNO implementation as follow-up treatment might lead to fewer exacerbations. Low quality evidence suggests that FeNo measurement could be useful in controlling inhaled glucocorticoid doses in adult asthma patients and it could have moderate sensitivity and specificity in asthma diagnosis.
In patients with chronic cough, low-quality evidence suggests that this technology presents a moderate capacity to diagnose cough variant asthma and does not allow drawing conclusions on its usefulness to predict response to inhaled corticoids. No evidence was identified in relation to other chronic cough etiologies.
Most clinical practice guidelines identified do not recommend its use. Some private United States health sponsors cover the test while others consider it at experimental stage.
