Risk of bias (quality) assessment
The Cochrane risk of bias tool was adopted to assess the risk of bias for each RCT. Each RCT was scored as “high risk,” “low risk,” or “unclear” with respect to random sequence generation, allocation concealment, blinding process, incomplete outcome data, and selective reporting.
Strategy for data synthesis
Data synthesis and analysis were performed using R 2.11.1 software (R Foundation for Statistical Computing; Vienna, Austria) in the metafor package. A two-sided p value = 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Dichotomous outcomes were collected to determine risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the individual studies. Heterogeneity was tested according to the I-squared statistic, in which I-squared=50% indicated a substantial level of heterogeneity, and the statistical test of heterogeneity, in which p=0.05 indicated heterogeneity. The random-effects summary estimates (according to the DerSimonian–Laird method) were reported if significant heterogeneity was evident according to either test; otherwise, fixed-effect summary estimates (according to the Mantel–Haenszel method) were reported.
