Condition or domain being studied
Sexual dysfunction in women is a challenging and difficult problem to treat. There can be multiple etiologies for these problems, and they can present differently in patients. Practitioners and patients can become frustrated when treatment becomes elusive.
Participants/ population
Inclusion criteria:
- women with sexual dysffunction
- underwent physical therapy modalities
- clinical trials and retrospective/prospective studies
Exclusion criteria:
- bibliographic review
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
The interventions inclusion criteria:
- physical therapy modalities - any modality that use physcial therapy to treat this condition. These modalities include eletrical stimulation, pelvic floor muscle exercise (training), perineal massage and behavioral therapy.
Comparator(s)/ control
The women submitted to physical therapy modalities could be compared with surgical procedures, no treatment and cognitive therapy.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Sexual disfunction (sexual desire, arousal, orgasmic disorders and/or dyspareunia).
Secondary outcomes
Pelvic floor muscle function
Pain
Quality of life
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
The qualitity of individual studies will be evaluated by JADAD score. Risk of bias will be assessed by I-squared test to evaluate the heterogenity.
Strategy for data synthesis
All included studies will be analyzed together to evaluate the effect of physical therapy treatment on sexual dysfunction.
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
If possible, subgroup analysis will be performed in each physical therapy modality.
