Review question(s)
Does exposure to a restricted smoking policy in an inpatient psychiatric facility impact smoking behaviours?
Searches
The review will be conducted in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement.
The search strategy used for the review will involved a general electronic database search of PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and EMBASE from inception to June 2012 using the following search terms: ("smoking" AND "psychiatric department, hospital" AND "patient discharge"), ("tobacco" AND "mental health" AND "admission" OR "discharge"), (“psychiatric” AND “smoke-free” OR “smoking ban” AND “inpatient”), (“smoking” AND “mental health” AND “hospitalized OR hospitalised”), ("smoking" AND “psychiatric" AND "restricted"). No date limits will be set on the search, and results will be restricted to “human” articles, written in English.
Types of study to be included
No restrictions on the type of study design.
Condition or domain being studied
Changes in smoking behaviour (e.g. cigarette consumption, quit attempts, abstinence) and smoking-related expectancies, views and perceptions.
Participants/ population
Participants must be inpatients of a psychiatric facility with a smoking restriction (ranging from a complete smoking ban to partial bans).
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
Exposure will comprise admission to an inpatient psychiatric facility with a restricted smoking policy. Studies will be included if the restricted smoking policy is part of routine care in the hospital. Studies will be excluded if additional interventions are provided to participants, aside from standard hospital care.
Comparator(s)/ control
Not applicable.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Changes in smoking behaviour, including, but not limited to, daily cigarette consumption, quit attempts and abstinence rates.
Secondary outcomes
Changes in smoking-related perceptions, motivations, views or beliefs.
Data extraction, (selection and coding)
Data will be extracted independently by the first and second authors and compared. A third author will be called upon if discrepancies occur, and these will be resolved via consensus
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
The quality of included studies will be assessed using the Newcastle-Ottowa Scale (Wells et al., 2008) or similar.
Quality assessment is unlikely to influence planned synthesis.
Strategy for data synthesis
Narrative synthesis.
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
None planned.
