Types of study to be included
Will include randomised controlled studies that look at effect of nutritional supplementation. Also cohort and case-controlled studies.
The excluded studies will be reviews, systematic reviews, theses, editorials, opinion, conference abstracts, conference papers.
Condition or domain being studied
Patients during bed rest. Nutritional supplementation.
Participants/ population
Inclusion: adults during bed rest (any length)
Exclusion: Anyone under 18 years of age, animal studies
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
Inclusions: received additional nutritional supplementation in the form of any combination of protein, fat, carbohydrate, during the period of bed rest.
Comparator(s)/ control
None
Context
Studies in hospitalised/institutionalised patients rather than studies that focus on healthy subjects.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Change in muscle mass and/or function with nutritional supplementation.
Secondary outcomes
None
Data extraction, (selection and coding)
Titles and/or abstracts of studies retrieved using the search strategy and those from additional sources will be screened independently by two review authors to identify studies that potentially meet the inclusion criteria outlined above. The full text of these potentially eligible studies will be retrieved and independently assessed for eligibility by two review team members. Any disagreement between them over the eligibility of particular studies will be resolved through discussion by both reviewers.
Information extacted from studies will include: participant characteristics/demographics; intervention and setting; outcome data/results.
Two review authors will extract data independently using a standardised data extraction form, discrepancies will be identified and resolved through discussion (with a third author where necessary). Missing data will be requested from study authors.
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
A validated quality assessment/bias tool such as the PEDro scale will be used. Two review authors will independently assess the risk of bias in included studies by considering the following characteristics: subject randomisation; treatment allocation concealment; blinding of subjects/therapists/assessors; completeness of outcome data; selective outcome reporting; other sources of bias.
Disagreements between the review authors over the risk of bias in particular studies will be resolved by discussion, with involvement of a third review author where necessary.
Strategy for data synthesis
Collate and summarise the results; descriptive data synthesis/narrative (table summarising populations, sample sizes, study quality, outcome measures); quantitative data synthesis.
For data synthesis, if results are continuous then data will be calculated for effect size (standardised mean difference).
For results that are dichotomous, results will be summarised with odds ratios.
Meta-analysis will be used if data suits.
For assessing the quality of body of evidence, GRADE approach will be applied.
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
