We aim to contact authors of relevant studies.
Types of study to be included
Clinical controlled trials and prospective cohort studies.
Condition or domain being studied
Caries in children
Participants/ population
Pregnant women
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
Any preventive program, including education given by any health personal, professional interventions (e.g. fluoride varnish, temporary restorations, sealants)
Comparator(s)/ control
Groups without the intervention
Context
Dental caries is the most common disease in children. There is evidence of vertical transmission of cariogenic bacteria and also some studies that suggest that is possible to establish preventive programs in mothers to prevent caries in their children.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Change in caries in children
We will measure any change expressed in carious, filled or missed temporal or permanent teeth by caries, in preschool children, school children and adolescents.
Secondary outcomes
Cariogenic bacteria levels
Periodontal health
Data extraction, (selection and coding)
Both authors will independently extract data onto previously piloted standardized forms. During the procedure, any disagreement will be resolved by consensus and mutual understating.
We will extract:
General information
Date of data extraction, study ID, name of authors, first author, author’s contact, source of paper, and objective of the study.
Study details
Study design, location, settings, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample size and power calculations.
Characteristics of participants
Total number of participants, medical and family history, level of caries, status of oral health, previous abortions/operatives/obstetrics history, birth weight of previous babies (if available) and measurement of socioeconomic status.
Intervention details
Follow up
Measurements in the children: caries level, cariogenic bacteria level, oral health status
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
Every paper will be critically appraised using CONSORT or STROBE tools.
Strategy for data synthesis
If moderate heterogeneity (I square value > 30%) is found then we will use a random effect method to synthesize the results.
We will calculate NNT and absolute risk reduction with their corresponding confidence intervals.
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
Socioeconomic status, mother literacy and any relevant mother status.
Dissemination plans
Present in dentistry conference/congress
Publish in scientific dental journal
