The prevalence of HIV among truck drivers (long distance) in resource-poor settings
Are truck drivers at higher risk of acquisition of HIV?
Acquisition:
What is the prevalence of STI/HIV infections?
What is the STI/HIV prevalence in prostitutes?
What is the HIV/STI prevalence in truck drivers?
Our aim was to research the prevalence of HIV in truck drivers. We wish to compare this outcome with the prevalence of HIV in other groups.
The prevalence of risk determinants of HIV in this population
Are truck drivers at higher risk of transmission of HIV?
Transmission:
- knowledge/awareness
- number of partners
- source/type of partners
- condom use
- alcohol/drugs use
What is the prevalence of risk factors for the transmission of AIDS in truck drivers?
Searches
A search was carried out in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane. We included reviews from 2000.
Types of study to be included
No case reports will be included but there are no other restrictions on types of study design.
Condition or domain being studied
The background of this review is that truck drivers are considered to be a population at higher risk of transmission and acquisition of HIV. While mobility in itself does not put truck drivers at risk, other behaviours might.
To explore this hypothesis (that truck drivers are at higher risk of transmission and acquisition of HIV), we would review the literature and explore:
1. The prevalence of HIV among truck drivers (long distance) in resource-poor settings
2. The prevalence of risk determinants of HIV in this population
Participants/ population
Truck drivers (long distance) in resource-poor settings;
Truck drivers:
age;
marital status;
religion;
education; and
time from home
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
The prevalencerisk determinants of HIV among (long distance) truck drivers in resource-poor settings
Transmission:
knowledge/ awareness;
number of partners;
source/type of partners;
condom use; and
alcohol/drugs use
Comparator(s)/ control
We do not intend compare alternatives.
Context
Truck drivers (long distance) in resource-poor settings; not including Europe, and the United States of America.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Prevalence of HIV and risk determinants.
Secondary outcomes
None
Data extraction, (selection and coding)
One researcher (I will be controlled by my supervisor). We will discuss the discrepancies.
Systematic search in EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane.
Data extraction:
Long distance truckdrivers; kilometers;
Country;
Number of participants in study;
Knowledge/ awareness of truckdrivers;
Number of partners;
Source/type of partners;
Condom use; and
Alcohol/drugs use
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
I will be checked by my supervisor. Discrepancies will be discussed.
Strategy for data synthesis
If we know the prevalence is of HIV and the risk determinants in long distance truck drivers, we will be able to adapt the kind of care truck drivers need in (for example) road clinics.
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
None planned.
