Are fluoridated resin based dental sealants more effective for caries prevention than resin based dental sealants?
Searches
We will search for any published interventional clinical trial available in PubMed, Scielo, Bireme or systematic review also in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews which compares resin based dental sealants vs fluoridated resin dental sealants for the prevention of caries in permanent teeth.
PubMed (January 1980 to Dec 2012);
ClinicalTrial.gov (January 1980 to Dec 2012).
Scielo (January 1980 to Dec 2012);
Bireme (January 1980 to Dec 2012);
Cochrane Database of Systematic Rreviews (January 1980 to Dec 2012);
We will search for papers in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Types of study to be included
Inclusion criteria: RCT with intervention (fluoridated sealants) vs control (non-fluoridated sealants) applied in split-mouth or two-arms trials with outcome measured in caries (DMF T-S index).
Exclusion criteria: use of ionomer based sealants
Exclusion criteria: participants with orofacial anomalies (e.g., cleft lip and palate), dental pathologies (e.g., cyst and impactions) and medical conditions (e.g., diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis).
Condition or domain being studied
Dental caries in permanent teeth, measured in DMF.
Participants/ population
Children, adolescents or adults with permanent teeth.
Intervention(s), exposure(s)
Fluoridated resin based dental sealants.
Comparator(s)/ control
Resin based dental sealant without fluoride.
Context
DMF is a caries index that measure the amount of teeth or surfaces with Decay, Missed by caries or Filled (restored) by caries.
Outcome(s)
Primary outcomes
Prevented fraction of caries, measured in DMF index
Secondary outcomes
any side effect
Data extraction, (selection and coding)
Titles and/or abstracts of studies retrieved using the search strategy will be screened independently by two review authors to identify studies that potentially meet the inclusion criteria outlined above. The full text of these potentially eligible studies will be retrieved and independently assessed for eligibility by two review authors. Any disagreement between them over the eligibility of particular studies will be solved by discussion or judged by a third reviewer author.
Risk of bias (quality) assessment
We will use the CONSORT tool to asess bias, that includes:
Randomisation sequence generation;
Treatment allocation concealment;
Blinding;
Completeness of outcome data;
Selective outcome reporting;
Other sources of bias.
Strategy for data synthesis
We will calculate the heterogeneity across studies using I-squared. The measure of effect will be calculated for each study by calculating risk ratios (for dichotomous outcomes) or standardised mean differences (for continuous outcomes).
Analysis of subgroups or subsets
We expect to find some differences also according to baseline caries index.
Dissemination plans
Present at international dental conferences (IADR) and publish in international dental journals such as Caries Res, J Dent Res
