Sixty-eight studies were included in the review: 16 comparative and 52 non-comparative studies. Four studies were RCTs and all were at unclear risk of bias; six studies used a placebo intervention. Sample sizes ranged from one to 406 participants (median 21, mean 52.7). There were no studies of interventions to prevent intertrigo.
Treatment interventions included antimycotics (38 studies), corticosteroids (17 studies), antibiotics (eight studies), antiseptics (five studies), combined preparations (18 studies) and surgery (15 studies). Detailed results were presented in separate online supplementary tables. Most study authors reported positive results. In studies with placebo arms, many placebo-treated patients reported improvement or healing. In studies of surgery (reduction mammaplasty), inframammary intertrigo decreased substantially after surgery.
