Citation Third eye retroscope (Avantis Medical Systems Inc.) for aiding the colonoscopic detection of colorectal polyps and adenomas. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2012 Authors' conclusions Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and the second in women, with over 1.2 million new cancer cases and over half a million deaths per year. Most cases of colorectal cancer occur in individuals 50 years of age and older, and regular screening of individuals older than 50 years reduces deaths due to the disease. Colonoscopy has long been considered the reference standard for the diagnosis and screening of cancerous and precancerous colorectal lesions and it allows for visual inspection and biopsy or removal of suspicious lesions. However, the reported miss rates of colonoscopy range from 22% to 28% of polyps, and 20% to 24% of adenomas; a
missed lesion can progress to an invasive cancer over time. Factors contributing to colonoscopy miss rates include poor bowel preparation, too rapid withdrawal of the colonoscope, and an inability to visualize some sections of the colon wall, in particular, the proximal aspect of haustral folds and flexures where lesions can be hidden from the forward view of the colonoscope.
