Ottawa: Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH). 2012 Authors' conclusions One non-randomized study and two guidelines suggest that opioid trial periods may be effective in managing chronic non-cancer pain. When conducting a trial of opioid therapy, it is recommended to start with a low dosage, increase the dosage gradually over time, and monitor opioid effectiveness until an optimal dose is reached.
