Citation CADTH. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) for suturing in the emergency room and perineal washing during vaginal deliveries: a review of safety, evidence-based guidelines and recommendations. Ottawa: Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH). 2012 Authors' conclusions Evidence from two systematic reviews suggests that chlorhexidine for perineal and vaginal washing during labour does not appear to prevent maternal and neonatal infections; one guideline recommends that water be used for vaginal cleansing. No literature was identified regarding the safety or use of chlorhexidine prior to suturing in the emergency room. No literature was identified that specifically used chlorhexidine gluconate solution for these indications.
