Citation Warmuth M, Fischer S, Zechmeister-Koss I. Radiofrequenzablation bei Kopf- und Halstumoren. [Radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of head and neck cancer] Vienna: Ludwig Boltzmann Institut fuer Health Technology Assessment (LBIHTA). Decision Support Dokument Nr: 55. 2012 Authors' objectives Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively new, minimally-invasive ablation method that destroys tumors by local application of heat. This systematic review evaluates RFA for the treatment of head and neck cancer. Head and neck tumors encompass a group of malignant tumors located in the head and neck: lips, oral and nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx. Surgery is the standard therapy for treating head and neck cancer. However, because of complex structures in this area the intervention is risky. Authors' conclusions According to GRADE, the quality of evidence is very low due to the uncontrolled study design of the included case series. Overall, the available evidence is insufficient to assess the efficacy and safety of RFA compared to the respective standard therapy for the treatment of head and neck cancer. Currently, the inclusion into the hospital benefit catalogue is not recommended.
