Update. 2012 Authors' objectives Percutaneous mitral valve repair using the MitraClip® device intends to reduce severity of mitral valve regurgitation (MR) in patients with moderate-to-severe or severe MR. It might be used for patients eligible for surgery as well as for those at high surgical risk. Therapeutic aim of this intervention is to reduce symptoms of MR, to improve NYHA-Class and quality-of-life and to prolong life. Authors' conclusions Due to methodological limitations of the RCT and due to the uncontrolled study design of the before-after study, the quality of evidence is low-medium for operable patients. For inoperable patients/patients at high surgical risk the quality of evidence of the included before-after studies is very low due their uncontrolled study design. Overall, the available evidence is currently insufficient to assess the efficacy and safety of MitraClip® in comparison to the respective standard therapy for patients with MR. Therefore, the inclusion into the hospital benefit catalogue is not recommended, either for operable or for inoperable patients.
