Citation Amicosante AMV, Bernardini F, Cavallo A, Cerbo M, Jefferson T, Lo Scalzo A, Ratti M. Technologies for the identification of osteoporosis. Rome: Agenzia nazionale per i servizi sanitari regionali. 2009 Authors' objectives The objectives of this report are: to identify the most widely used technologies for the identification and assessment of osteoporosis in the target population in our country; to accurately describe the acquisition and use of the technology and its alternative in the Italian context; to assess the evidence for the chosen technologies, to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing DEXA with the most widely used alternatives used in the target population. Authors' conclusions DEXA is the most used device at outpatient level for the identification of osteoporosis in our target population and has a higher imaging efficacy when compared with QUS (its most likely competitor in 14 Italian regions). We identified 7 studies comparing DEXA with QUS in postmenopausal women. We did not carry out a meta-analysis. When using basic DEXA and QUS equipment, our economic evaluation based on over 12 and a half million women shows that DEXA is the dominant procedure for identifying osteoporosis in a general population of postmenopusal women (incremental cost effectiveness ratio €1,095).
DEXA is the dominant technology. Should improvements arise, this report should be updated.
