Directory Publication. 2013 Authors' conclusions Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is composed of educational, behavioral, and cognitive therapy elements, and focuses on challenging maladaptive beliefs and teaching adaptive beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. When used to prevent posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), CBT is provided within 1 to 4 weeks after the patient has experienced a traumatic event.
