Citation Acupuncture for treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2013 Authors' conclusions Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fifth-leading cause of death in developed countries. The major cause is smoking. The disease is characterized by obstructive symptoms, dyspnea or shortness of breath (SOB), and decreased exercise capacity, which are progressive over time. In patients with COPD, dyspnea is closely associated with quality of life and survival. Lung spirometry and arterial blood gas measurements are used to assess the severity of COPD, but these do not always correlate with the prevailing symptom of dyspnea. In patients with COPD, respiratory muscle strength may be decreased due to deconditioning and weight loss. Due to the constellation of findings in patients with COPD, multiple measures of disease severity, well-being, and function are used to assess disease progression or improvement.
