Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2013 Authors' conclusions Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of nonprogressive, permanent disorders affecting cognitive and motor development that result from disturbances occurring during brain development in the fetus or infant. Motor impairments such as weakness, fatigue, poor balance and coordination, rigidity, clonus, and spasticity are common in patients with CP. Spasticity can promote muscle stiffness, functional impairment, and atrophy. If left untreated, spasticity can lead to muscle fibrosis, contractures, and musculoskeletal deformities. CP is the most common childhood motor disability and is estimated to affect 1 in every 303 children in the United States. First-line treatment options include nonsurgical therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, hippotherapy, orthotics/casting and postural management, and medications. Orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures may also be considered in treatment depending on symptoms and response to
conservative treatments.
