Citation Transabdominal Cervical Cerclage (TAC) for the prevention of miscarriage. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2013 Authors' conclusions Cervical incompetence is painless dilation of the cervix without uterine contractions. The diagnosis
is based on a history of second- or early third-trimester pregnancy loss or preterm birth following
painless cervical dilation. Approximately 0.1% to 1.0% of pregnancies are complicated by cervical
incompetence. Cervical incompetence frequently recurs, and early or prophylactic treatment is
commonly undertaken in women with a known or suspected history of the disorder. Cervical
incompetence is frequently idiopathic, but also may be associated with surgery, trauma to the
cervix, or intrauterine exposure to diethylstilbestrol.
