Eficacia, seguridad y eficiencia de la electroestimulación medular en el tratamiento del dolor músculo-esquelético crónico.. [Efficacy, safety and efficiency of electrical spinal cord stimulation for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain] Seville: Andalusian Agency for Health Technology Assessment (AETSA). AETSA 2012 /15. 2013 Authors' objectives The goal of the present study was to assess the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of electrical stimulation of the spinal cord for the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain in patients with Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) or Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Authors' conclusions The evidence available suggests that electrical stimulation of the spinal cord is an efficient treatment for neuropathic pain in patients with failed back surgery or complex regional pain syndrome, which may provide additional benefits to the quality of life of these patients. [According to the literature analyzed, a number of minor side effects have been device related complications, although they were solved and required surgery in 24-38 % of cases.]
The results obtained in this review suggest that the use of SCS for the treatment of patients with failed back surgery or complex regional pain syndrome is cost-effective, although it requires a significant initial investment that is recovered over the medium and long term.
