Citation Martínez-Férez I, Romero-Tabares A, Beltrán-Calvo C. Ablación por radiofrecuencia de tumores de mama. Revisión sistemática. [Breast cancer ablation with radiofrequency. Systematic review] Seville: Andalusian Agency for Health Technology Assessment (AETSA). AETSA 2012/15. 2013 Authors' objectives To assess the efficacy and safety of ablation with radiofrequency in the treatment of localized breast tumors. Authors' conclusions Efficacy:
The feasibility studies reviewed demonstrate that AR is effective in the elimination of breast tumors –especially in the case of invasive ductal tumors– small in size (>3cm) and 1 cm apart from the skin and the pectoral muscle.
AR does not seem recommendable for the treatment of lobular carcinomas.
It cannot be determined whether AR is more, less or as effective as the existing alternative therapies.
The follow-up time of patients was short. Therefore, the long-term efficacy of AR could not be determined in this study.
Safety:
Since no serious adverse effects associated with AR were reported in the studies reviewed, we can conclude that AR is a safe treatment. However, the overall follow-up time of patients is short and the long-term safety of AR is unknown.
In general, at present there is no sufficient evidence available on the efficacy of AR that allows an appropriate clinical assessment of the efficacy and safety of AR in the treatment of localized breast tumors. Further comparative studies are necessary to assess the efficacy of AR vs. surgery –which is currently the reference therapy. These studies would be useful in assessing the efficacy and safety of ablation with radiofrequency vs. the therapies currently used, and in identifying its real clinical benefits.
