Citation CADTH. Antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with cardiac or orthopedic implants undergoing dental procedures: a review of the clinical effectiveness and guidelines. Ottawa: Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH). Rapid Response - Summary with Critical Appraisal. 2013 Authors' conclusions No randomized studies to support the use of oral antibiotic prophylaxis during dental procedures in patients with cardiac and orthopedic prostheses were identified. A single guideline for patients with orthopedic prostheses does not recommend oral antibiotic prophylaxis based on a lack of supportive evidence. Guidelines for cardiac implant patients have recommended both for and against prophylaxis in high risk-patients. While well-designed clinical studies are needed to address this medical issue, evidence may be difficult to obtain as such studies are likely to require very large sample sizes.
