[Effectiveness of patient self-testing and patient self-management of oral anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists] Seville: Andalusian Agency for Health Technology Assessment (AETSA). AETSA 2012/14. 2013 Authors' objectives To determine if patient self-testing (PST), alone or in combination with self-adjustment of doses (patient self-management [PSM]), is associated with a reduction in mortality, thromboembolic and bleeding events, quality of life or satisfaction, compared with usual care.
Authors' conclusions Compared with standard monitoring, PST and PSM of anticoagulation therapy showed reductions in both all-cause mortality and major thromboembolic events without an increase in bleeding events in highly motivated adults. Both mortality and thromboembolic events were decrease greater for PSM. Self-efficacy was the only one aspects of quality of life of patients that improved.
