Citation Health Quality Ontario. Criteria for switching from intravenous to oral antibiotics in patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia: a rapid review. Toronto: Health Quality Ontario (HQO). Rapid Review. 2013 Authors' objectives The objective of this analysis was to evaluate the criteria for switching from intravenous (IV) to oral antibiotics in adult patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia. Authors' conclusions In patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia, RCTs that evaluated switching from IV to oral antibiotics using a detailed set of criteria showed a shorter length of hospital stay in patients who switched to oral antibiotics, but no statistically significant difference in clinical cure compared with maintaining IV antibiotics. The criteria for switching commonly included hemodynamic stability, absence of fever, and ability to take oral drugs. The quality of the evidence was low.
