Rapid Response. 2014 Authors' conclusions The literature search did not find evidence on the clinical effectiveness, safety or cost effectiveness of chlorhexidine gluconate with alcohol compared to other antiseptics for the prevention of infections associated with peripheral intravenous devices. Guidelines recommend decontamination of the skin at the insertion site with 1-2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% alcohol before inserting a peripheral intravenous catheter.
