Citation BD veritor system for rapid detection of flu A+B (Becton, Dickinson and Company) for detection of Influenza types A and B viral antigens. Lansdale: HAYES, Inc.. Healthcare Technology Brief Publication. 2014 Authors' conclusions An estimated 5% to 20% of individuals in the United States are infected by an influenza virus causing acute respiratory disease each year, leading to 200,000 hospitalizations. Human influenza (flu) is caused by influenza virus types A, B, and C. Types A and B viruses are the most common cause of yearly seasonal flu epidemics, while type C virus is associated with milder forms of respiratory illness. The reference standards for laboratory confirmation of influenza virus infection are reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or viral culture. Rapid influenza diagnostic testing was developed to aid in the immediate diagnosis and treatment of influenza. Most rapid influenza diagnostic tests take approximately 15 minutes or less to complete but most lack ideal sensitivity and, therefore, additional standard testing is recommended to verify negative results. Test sensitivity ranges from 10% to 80% when compared with viral culture or RT-PCR.
Reported specificities of rapid influenza diagnostic tests range from approximately 85% to 100%. Thus, false-negative results are more common than false-positives. However, since the turnaround times for reference tests are hours or days, rapid diagnostic tests may be helpful so that treatment can be implemented.
