Citation Auclair Y, Hernandez Hurtado E, Fournier M. Avis sur les centres de jour en soins palliatifs. [Information brief concerning palliative care day centres] Quebec: Institut national d'excellence en sante et en services sociaux (INESSS). ETMIS 2015; 11(2). 2015 Authors' conclusions Although some evidence suggests that attending a PCDC may be beneficial for patients, the data do not enable determination of: (1) the contribution of PCDCs to management of symptoms or to improvement in patients' quality of life; (2) the contribution of PCDCs to efficient resource utilization in the HSSS; and (3) the risks associated with attending a PCDC. In light of these findings, INESSS concludes that the deployment of PCDCs in the health and social services network is not indicated at this time. However, this conclusion does not call into question the existence of palliative care day centres already in place or the planned centres that might be given priority on a regional basis, nor their financing mechanisms.
INESSS recommends:
1. Improving and strengthening in-home palliative care services;
2. Examining the possibility of offering adapted care and services to patients in the palliative phase of their disease as well as services for their natural caregivers within existing structures, such as day centres for seniors with reduced autonomy;
3. Promoting initiatives aimed at providing support to in-home palliative care patients and their natural caregivers and at reducing their isolation; and
4. Supporting the collection of data with respect to efficacy and efficiency indicators for all existing and future PCDCs (or other related facilities) in Québec.
